Canal & River Trust

Wonders of the Waterways

We were recently appointed to the Canal & River Trust design framework. Canal & River Trust cares for over 2,000 miles of canals and rivers across England and Wales, protecting one of the UK’s most important networks of historic waterways. We were commissioned to produce two visitor guides celebrating the remarkable locations, attractions and heritage found across its network. The guides bring these destinations to life and encourage people to explore the waterways for themselves.

The challenge:

Canal & River Trust wanted to showcase some of the most impressive features across its network, from towering aqueducts to dramatic lock flights and historic tunnels. The challenge was presenting these places in a way that felt accessible and engaging to a wide audience. The guides needed to celebrate their heritage while also helping readers quickly understand what makes each location special and worth visiting.

The solution:

Alongside the design, our role included writing the copy and structuring the guides so each location is presented clearly and consistently. Each location combines short heritage insights with practical visitor information, bringing together facts, local highlights and things to do nearby. Strong imagery and clear mapping make the guide easy to navigate. The result is a pair of engaging publications that captures the character of the waterways and encourages people to discover them.
