Accessible Website

Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey is a specialist charity supporting people across Surrey who are blind, partially sighted, Deaf, hard of hearing or deafblind. The charity commissioned Creative Triangle to redesign and build its website, replacing an increasingly complex platform with a modern, welcoming and accessible experience. Our aim was to make trusted information and support easier to find, while creating a flexible WordPress website that worked across different devices and access methods and could be confidently maintained by the charity’s team.

The challenge:

We began by participating in focus groups with the charity’s staff and beneficiaries. Participants found the existing website difficult to navigate, with important information often requiring too many clicks to reach. They also did not want to be categorised immediately by their disability, so the new structure needed to let visitors begin with what they needed instead. The website had grown to more than 100 pages, creating duplicated content, inconsistent journeys and a significant maintenance burden. We used these findings to create a MoSCoW priorities document and restructure the website into approximately 40 focused core pages.

The solution:

We developed a clearer information architecture supported by consistent navigation, structured content and improved search and referral journeys. We created a new visual system that paired the charity’s established yellow with navy to strengthen contrast and readability, then built a responsive WordPress website using reusable templates and content types. Staff can now manage news, vacancies, events, resources, forms and donations without rebuilding layouts.

Accessibility was embedded throughout the design and development process, including keyboard navigation, screen reader support, accessible forms, narrow-screen layouts and British Sign Language support through Signly. Where the events and donation plugins introduced accessibility barriers, we developed targeted enhancements that preserved their functionality. The website was independently assessed against WCAG 2.2 AA, including assistive-technology and disabled-user testing, and all assessed items passed the final external retest.

The impact:

Head of Fundraising & Engagement at Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey, said:

“We’ve really enjoyed working with the team on our new website. They understood our brief from the start and took the time to understand how important accessibility is to us and to the people we support who use our services.

They attended our focus groups, listened to feedback and made useful recommendations along the way. They’ve always explained things clearly, without too much technical jargon, and have been very quick to respond to questions and make any changes we’ve asked for.

We’re delighted with the finished website and would be happy to recommend them to other organisations looking for a knowledgeable, responsive and collaborative web agency.”
