Social Mobility Commission

State of the Nation 2025

The Social Mobility Commission tasked us with designing the State of the Nation 2025 report — the Commission’s annual flagship publication presented to Parliament. Using data about occupation, income, education, housing and wealth, the 2025 report provides comprehensive analysis of social mobility in the UK, highlighting key trends at a local level.

The challenge:

The State of the Nation 2025 report needed to distil technical data and research into a publication that could engage policymakers, academics, and the wider public alike. The visual identity had to remain consistent with previous reports while evolving the design to reflect the depth and scale of the 2025 edition. As an official government publication, the report also had to meet WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards, ensuring it was clear, inclusive, and easy to navigate for all audiences.

The solution:

We developed a modern, structured design through the use of strong typographic hierarchy, bold use of colour, and data visualisation. We made key insights easy to digest while maintaining visual continuity with the Commission’s established identity. The 116 page report was delivered as both print and accessible digital PDFs, formatted to meet WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards. Our design approach helped communicate the evolving story of social mobility with authority and impact, supporting the Commission’s mission to inform policy and improve life chances across the UK.

The impact:

Head of Analysis at Social Mobility Commission, said:

“Working with the Creative Triangle team on SMC’s State of the Nation 2025 report was an absolute pleasure; they were incredibly organised, friendly, and professional from day one. Their high-quality work and clear communication made the process painless, but what truly stood out was their flexibility with our shifting deadlines and their lightning-fast reactivity to last-minute amendments at the very end.”
