Airside Drivers Handbook

We were tasked with creating a new version of Heathrow’s Airside Drivers Handbook. Expanding from 28 to 60 pages, we incorporated new vital information and sections into an A5 handbook designed to inform Team Heathrow colleagues about best practices for safe driving around the airport.

A cover for the Heathrow Airside Drivers Handbook featuring a branded vehicle parked on the tarmac with an aircraft in the background. The design includes a purple gradient header with the title in white text and the Heathrow logo on the right.

The challenge:

We needed to include a large amount of critical information into a handbook that was easy to navigate and understand. The content needed to include updated safety protocols, driver permits, speed limits, along with airfield maps highlighting specific safety concerns like dropped loads, road traffic collisions and more.

The image is split into 4 sections. Top Left: A Heathrow-branded vehicle on the tarmac with an aircraft in the background. Top Right: An open handbook page providing guidelines on giving way to aircraft and vehicles, accompanied by clear text and visuals. Bottom Left: An open handbook spread featuring driving guidelines. Bottom Right: A brightly coloured airside safety vehicle parked in front of a United Airlines aircraft.

The solution:

We designed the handbook to enhance readability and user engagement to ensure understanding across Heathrow’s diverse airside team. We incorporated images of the new fleet of Heathrow vehicles and detailed maps of the airfield. A dedicated section was included on the ‘Safety Six’ branding and related safety posters—both of which we had developed previously for Heathrow. This section reinforces the continuous emphasis on safety and ensures that the handbook is visually cohesive with other safety communications displayed airside.

The impact:

Airside Safety Improvement Manager at Heathrow, said:

“Safety doesn’t have to be complicated. The new handbook is a great example of how clear communication and thoughtful design can empower our colleagues to make informed, safe decisions when driving around the airport.”
